The History Behind 5 De Mayo & Salsa making demonstration!

Join us at The Newberry Museum on Saturday, May 3rd at 11:00 a.m. for a presentation by Rubi Flores on "The History Behind 5 De Mayo." Learn about its true history and how it came to be a popular celebration all throughout the United States. She will also have a salsa making demonstration using a traditional molcajete (carved out of volcano stone), that is used to grind spices and chilies to make salsa. An essential kitchen tool used during the Aztec and Mayan precolonial era.

This presentation coincides with our newest exhibition, “A Global Odyssey,” which is an exhibit that highlights Newberry’s international roots through immigration of the early settlers, cultural artifacts, and international industries in Newberry County.

Museum admission and presentation are free to the public.
